PCL Injuries (Posterior Cruciate Ligament)
Dashboard injuries often heal without surgery.
The PCL is the strongest ligament in the knee. Unlike the ACL, PCL tears have a huge capacity to heal. Grade I and II tears almost never need surgery if braced properly in a specific dynamic brace.
Symptoms
- Pain back of knee
- Instability going down stairs
- Mild swelling
- Difficulty sprinting
Conservative treatment
- Dynamic PCL Rebound Brace
- Quad strengthening
- Avoidance of hamstring curls
- Orthobiologic treatment
When is surgery needed?
PCL Reconstruction only for Grade III combined injuries with multi-ligament damage and significant instability despite conservative treatment.
