Osgood Schlatter Disease
Knee pain in active adolescents.
Inflammation of the growth plate at the top of the shin. It is self-limiting but can be painful. Management focuses on activity modification and flexibility, not stopping sports entirely. It may also be Sinding-Larsen-Johansson syndrome.
Symptoms
- Bump below knee
- Pain with activity
- Tenderness
Conservative treatment
- Ice massage
- Patellar strap
- Hamstring/Quad stretching
- Activity management
- Anti-inflammatory drugs
When is surgery needed?
Surgery to remove ossicles is only considered in adulthood if pain persists.
