Iliotibial Band Syndrome (ITBS)
Outer knee pain in runners and cyclists.
Friction of the IT band over the femur. It is a biomechanical issue, often linked to weak hip stabilizers. Foam rolling hurts but doesn't fix it; strengthening the glutes does.
Symptoms
- Sharp outer knee pain
- Pain at specific mileage
- Clicking sensation
- Pain running downhill
Conservative treatment
- Hip abductor strengthening
- Gait analysis
- Release of TFL muscle
- Orthobiologic treatment
When is surgery needed?
IT Band release is extremely rare.
