Distal Biceps Tendon Tear
A sudden pop in front of the elbow with loss of twisting strength.
This usually happens during heavy lifting and most often affects active men. A complete distal biceps tear causes bruising, altered contour, and a clear loss of supination strength. Not every partial tear needs surgery, but active patients with complete tears usually benefit from early repair.
Symptoms
- Sudden pop in front of elbow
- Bruising into forearm
- Weakness turning a screwdriver
- Change in biceps contour
Conservative treatment
- Sling and rest in selected partial tears
- Pain control
- Early motion when safe
- Physical Therapy
When is surgery needed?
Primary reinsertion for complete tears in active patients, preferably early.
